As many as one in five American children under the age of 17 has a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year, according to a new federal report.
Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine announced he will provide grant money for comprehensive services for sexual assault victims. The announcement comes days after two Steubenville teenagers were found delinquent of rape.
DeWine said a completed survey found that 52 out of Ohio's 88 counties do not offer these comprehensive services. He said it is crucial that adequate services are available to anyone who has been sexually assaulted.
"Our goal is to ensure a quick and compassionate emergency response is available to any victim of sexual assault any time of the week any time of the day anywhere In the state of Ohio, " said DeWine.
The five year, $1.5 million project, focuses on expanding services to four Ohio counties. DeWine was joined by Ohio representatives Nan Baker and Kirk Schuring.
Lawmakers announced legislation that would levy a $100 fee on sex offenders to pay for rape crisis programs such as hotlines, victim advocacy and support services.
