The West Virginia Department of Transportation has agreed to pay a $30,000 penalty to settle alleged violations of underground storage tank regulations at 10 facilities operated by the Division of Highways.
According to a news release from the Environmental Protection Agency, the DOT has also agreed to improve its monitoring of underground storage tank procedures. The EPA says millions of gallons of petroleum products and hazardous substances are stored in such underground infrastructure in the U.S.
The DOT was cited for not complying with safeguards to prevent, detect and control leaks. The agency said the transportation department failed to document certain release detection efforts at 17 underground diesel and used fuel storage tanks in Barboursville, Berkeley Springs, Buckhannon, Forest Hill, Gassaway, Harrisville, New Creek, Peterson, Wilkinson and Williamson.
The EPA says the state cooperated in bringing its program into compliance.
