Thousands of people woke up Thursday morning without power on one of the coldest spring days in memory.
The outage was reported in Lincoln and Cabell Counties around 6 a.m. Thursday.
According to Phil Moye of Appalachian Power, a broken cross arm on a transmission line is to blame for the outage. That cross arm was scheduled to be replaced, but broke before crews could get to it.
Marycait Hoke works at Hager Supply Hardware in Hamlin. She said they were lucky enough to have a generator running. "It's pretty nice," said Hoke. "But there are some parts of the store where the power is not working, like the back and a little bit upstairs."
This time last year, Hamlin experienced 80 degree temperatures. "It's very frustrating," said Hoke.
Schools in the area were dismissed early. Those schools included Hamlin Elementary, West Hamlin Elementary, Guyan Valley Middle, Lincoln County High, and Salt Rock Elementary.
Hoke said, "You just have to keep warm as best you can. Wear heavy stuff, surround yourself with blankets."
At the outage's peak, 2,200 customers were without power in these areas. Over the course of the day, that number dropped to fewer than 100.
