Burlington residents learn about Underground Railroad

Posted: Updated:

Historians talked to folks in Burlington, Ohio Monday night about the local connection to the Underground railroad.

They say a group of 37 escaped slaves found their way to freedom with help from local townsfolk and businessmen.

Local Historian Chris Saunders gave a presentation to people at the Burlington Baptist Church about how the former slaves found refuge in the area.

They say people from all over have contacted them about finding their roots to the group.

The group became known as the "Burlington 37" and founded one of the oldest churches in the country in Burlington.

Organizers say although most Civil War battles were fought far away, history is still right beneath our feet.
