North Central Democracy for America and the West Virginia chapter of the Sierra Club are hosting a meeting regarding an ownership transfer that would increase customer electricity rates.

The event features a panel of speakers "who will make the case for preventing another increase in West Virginians electric bills with job-creating energy efficiency." The event is being held at the Caperton Center in Clarksburg April 4 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

"Investing in energy efficiency, rather than an expensive coal fired power plant, is a much smarter investment to reduce utility bills and create jobs in West Virginia," a press release states. "Measures to cut electricity use through energy efficiency cost less than half of the cost of electricity generated by the Harrison Power Station and could create more than 19,000 jobs in West Virginia alone over the next three years."

Columbus, Ohio-based FirstEnergy wants subsidiary Mon Power to buy the 80 percent stake in the plant from Allegheny Energy Supply Co. Critics have accused the company of attempting to shift coal-fired assets from the deregulated Ohio market to West Virginia customers.
