UPDATE:

According to a note from the West Virginia State Police:

"We have warrants in hand (Tennis Melvin Maynard) for attempted murder of a police officer stemming from the Delbarton incident.  Williamson PD will be responsible for any charges related to the shooting of Sheriff Crum.  At this point, it is believed that Mr. Maynard will survive his injuries.  He was shot multiple times.  I am not releasing further details of his injuries at this time.  We recovered a Glock .40 caliber at the Delbarton scene which we believe was used in the shooting of Sheriff Crum."

UPDATE:

WILLIAMSON, W.Va. (AP) - State police say the man suspected of gunning down a West Virginia sheriff pulled a weapon on a deputy who shot him.

Authorities didn't reveal the condition of the suspect, 37-year-old Tennis Melvin Maynard. West Virginia State Police Capt. David Nelson said Maynard was taken to a local hospital, where he remained Wednesday evening.

Nelson said Maynard crashed into a bridge, held up a gun as he got out of the vehicle and was shot.

State police say Maynard is suspected of killing Mingo County Sheriff Eugene Crum. The sheriff was gunned down Wednesday in the spot where he usually parked and ate lunch in Williamson.

Crum was elected last year and has been cracking down on the drug trade, but it's unclear whether his death was related to the new Operation Zero Tolerance.

ORIGINAL:

A person at the Williamson Police Department has confirmed that the Mingo County Sheriff Eugene Crum was shot and killed on April 3.  The incident happened on Third Avenue near the underpass.

Crum was eating lunch when a car pulled up next to his vehicle.  Police are still working on details but they believe that the suspect in the car shot Sheriff Crum four times before fleeing the scene.

Tennis Melvin Maynard, 37, led police on a short chase that ended in Delbarton, WV.  According to the WVSP, Maynard exited the vehicle with a weapon and was shot multiple times. State troopers are investigating the scene of Maynard's shooting and city police are investigating the scene of Crum's shooting.

We reached out to the West Virginia Sheriff's Association about the shooting, here is a look at what they had to say:

We are stunned and devastated at this situation. When someone walks up and shoots the chief law enforcement officer of the county it knocks you back. We are currently gathering information and waiting for more details. We are just asking everyone to please pray for Sheriff Crum's family and the law enforcement community as we sort out the information.

In neighboring Virginia, the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office posted the following statement to their Facebook page:

Our thoughts and prayers are with our brothers and sisters in Mingo County, Sheriff Crum has been shot dead outside the courthouse. Please join us in saying a prayer for the family and the deputies left behind.

Crum was known for his tough enforcement program known as Operation Zero Tolerance and in 2012 the prosecutor's office saw the third highest number of felony convictions in Mingo County history.

A candlelight vigil has been planned for 8 p.m. April 4 on the steps of the Mingo County Courthouse.

Delegate Justin Marcum and Delegate Harry Keith White, both D-Mingo, are wearing black ribbons in remembrance of Sheriff Crum.  Delegate White released a statement on the shooting.
