Fred L. King, West Virginia University's vice president for research, was one of four new members elected to the Oak Ridge Associated Universities' board of directors.

ORAU is a 109-member university consortium linked with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

The group is composed of university faculty and students who collaborate on major scientific initiatives that enhance the scientific research and education enterprise of the United States.

ORAU's board of directors provides policy and fiduciary oversight of ORAU operations for its membership.

At WVU, King oversees the research enterprise for WVU, including the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center and regional campuses. His responsibilities also include the management of operations of the research office, which aids faculty-led research at WVU.

King began his career at WVU in 1990 as an assistant professor in the chemistry department in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences. He rose to professor and also served as director of graduate studies and associate dean for research and graduate education.

He earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry at James Madison University and his doctorate in analytical chemistry from the University of Virginia.
