NEW:

A crowd of hundreds showed up Thursday evening at a candlelight vigil to honor the memory of Mingo County Sheriff Eugene Crum.

People said the night Crum was sworn in as sheriff three months ago, it rained in downtown Williamson.

That's why they said it's fitting it also rained on Thursday, the night after the sheriff was murdered.

The vigil began at 8 p.m. on the steps of the Mingo County courthouse in Williamson.

At 2 p.m. on Thursday, Mingo County commissioners unanimously appointed Crum's widow, Rosie Crum, as the interim sheriff until 2014. She took her oath later that evening at the vigil.

Thursday evening was the first time many saw Rosie in public after her husband's death on Wednesday. Their daughter, Julie Hall, spoke on behalf of the family.

"I know that my dad was cleaning up the drug problem in this county," Hall said. "Operation Zero Tolerance was his way of saying that enough is enough."

Many said Rosie will carry on the legacy started by her husband when it came to cracking down on drugs.

"Behind every good man is an awesome woman, so I'm sure she will do her husband right," said Anne Moore, of Delbarton.

Crum was gunned down Wednesday, as he was eating lunch in his marked cruiser in Williamson.

Mingo County officials said the suspect is Tennis Melvin Maynard, 37, of Ragland. He will be charged with first degree murder.

Police say Maynard fled after shooting Crum, and crashed into a bridge. Maynard is currently in critical, but stable condition at Cabell Huntington Hospital after being shot by police after the crash.

He is also being charged with attempted murder as a result of that incident in Delbarton.

Officials have not officially released a motive in the shooting but County Commissioner Greg Smith said he believes Crum was targeted as a result of his crackdown on illegal drugs.
