A bill that would provide free breakfast and lunch to all West Virginia public school students received the stamp of approval from the House Education Committee.

Committee members heard from committee counsel and experts about how Senate Bill 663, otherwise known as Feed to Achieve, could benefit students in the long- and short-term.

Introduced by Sen. John Unger, D-Berkeley, the legislation would allow for public-private partnerships to fund the program. Donations, grants and other public money would be placed in a fund that would only be used toward the program. Unger, who chairs the Senate Select Committee on Children and Poverty, said the law would require county boards of education to adopt delivery systems to be sure all students have an adequate opportunity to eat breakfast, lunch or other food throughout the day.

The bill cleared the House Education Committee unanimously and will now be placed up for vote in the House of Delegates.
