Many families that live at Orchard Manor on Charleston's West Side did not want be identified for fear of retaliation.

They said they're worried about their children in the wake of gunfire.

Many said, warmer weather brings forth a higher crime rate.  "When it starts getting hot, people don't know how to act.  That's when it really hits the fan," said one mother who lives nearby.

Kenneth Hall's aunt lives at the complex.  "There were kids out here, and my little cousins had to scoop them up and take them in the house,"  he said, referring to shots that were fire early Monday evening.

One woman said hearing gunfire is nothing new.  She knows exactly what to do at the first sign of danger.  "I'm in the house," she said.  "I'm in the house.  I don't need my babies being hit by stray bullets.  Bullets ain't got no eyes on them."

To stay safe, she said she keeps to herself.  "I don't deal with people, I don't talk to people.  I don't even come out of the house unless I absolutely need to.  Go to work, come home.  That's about it," she said.

Hall said, "These little kids running around seeing that adults are doing this stuff so they think it's cool.  It's not."

Charleston police are looking for four suspects in connection to a report of shots fired on Monday evening.

The suspects could be driving a dark, four-door sedan which may have white writing in the back window, according to police. The call came in to Kanawha County Metro 911 dispatchers at about 7:10 p.m.

Charleston police blocked off Copenhaver Drive, between Hutchinson Street and Lippert Street as soon as they got to the scene.

Officers said that there appeared to have been some sort of shoot-out, and several homes at a nearby apartment complex were struck by gun fire.

There were no injuries reported as a result, according to police.

Officers said they found numerous shell casings at the scene. They're reviewing surveillance video from the area.

If you have any information that could assist the investigation, you're asked to contact Charleston Police.
