A Mason County school teacher is facing child abuse charges.

Dwayne Ray Russell, a music teacher at Beale Elementary School in Gallipolis Ferry, W. Va. has been charged with child abuse by a custodian causing injury, according to a statement from West Virginia State Police.

Police say Russell stomped on an 11-year-old student's foot Thursday morning. According to a criminal complaint, the teacher said, "I wish you would cooperate with me in class" as he "held his foot to the ground" and was "grinding it into the floor."

When the student tried to pull his foot out, he said, "no, you're staying right here," according to court documents.

After school, the student was taken to Pleasant Valley Hospital to have his foot examined. Officers documented "obvious swelling and bruising."

Russell was arraigned about 12 p.m. Friday. He has been released on a $30,000 property bond.
