Kanawha County Sheriff's Office: We're well prepared for a large scale emergency

Posted: Updated:

When it comes to preparing for events like those that occurred in Boston Monday, Kanawha County law enforcement says they're ready.

"We have to be prepared for the worst case scenario.  We can't go in just hoping for the best," said Cpt. Sean Crosier with the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department.

That "it will never happen here" mentality doesn't cross the minds of this police officers.  The SWAT team, the Bomb Squad, extensive training and plenty of man hours means being prepared, even for the worst of events.

Crosier said, "Even a small mission, or a large event, we always plan well in advance."

Armored vehicles, the bomb truck, all at the deputies disposal in the case of an emergency.  When they use the equipment, Crosier said there has to be a plan in place.

"Not to say that plan won't change or be modified," said Crosier.  It's a living plan, it changes as the event changes."

The Sheriff's Department trains regularly with State Police, Charleston Police, and other agencies.

Crosier said their department is the only agency in the state that trains specifically in weapons of mass destruction.  He says to be ready, it's about functioning as a team, and staying alert.

"If you see something, say something.  If you see a suspicious package, suspicious activity, please dial 911," said Crosier.
