Several teachers have been recognized for their outstanding work by West Virginia University's Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources.

The winners of the outstanding teacher, researcher and adviser awards for 2012-2013 were recently announced by Gene Cilento, the Glen H. Hiner Dean of the college. The awards were handed out April 5 at the college's annual Honors Ceremony.

Melissa Morris, a teaching assistant professor in freshman engineering, was recognized as the teacher of the year. Also selected as outstanding teachers were Katerina Goseva-Popstojanova and Matthew Valenti, both of Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering; John Kuhlman, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering; and Avinash Unnikrishman, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

David Solley of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, was selected as this year's outstanding adviser. Valenti also was honored for his advising work.

Natalia Schmid of Lane was chosen as the college's outstanding researcher. Also recognized: Yuxin Liu and David Graham, of Lane; Hema Siriwardane, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering; and Nianqiang Wu and Xueyan Song, both of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

New Researcher of the Year honors went to Debangsu Bhattacharyya, Department of Chemical Engineering.

Earlier in the semester outstanding staff awards were presented to Karen Centofanti, Department of Mining Engineering; Candy Cordwell of NASA West Virginia Space Grant Consortium and WVU's Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering; Chuck Coleman of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering; and James Hall, Department of Chemical Engineering.
