Rob Alsop, who has served as chief of staff to Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin since 2010, is resigning.

According to a news release from Tomblin's office, Alsop will leave the governor's office this spring. Charlie Lorensen, secretary of the Department of Revenue, will take over for Alsop. Lorensen has been in his position since January 2011.

Tomblin commended Alsop for his leadership, deliberative process and ability to establish common ground.

"Without question, Rob is truly one of the hardest working public servants I have ever worked with under the Capitol dome," Tomblin said in a statement. "Rob never lost focus during his service and was a constant reminder of why we are here—to serve all West Virginians."

Alsop previously served as secretary of the Department of Revenue under then-Gov. Joe Manchin and as chief of staff to Sen. Carte Goodwin, D-W.Va.

"Other than being a husband and father, serving as your chief of staff has been the most gratifying chapter of my life," Alsop said. "In the governor's office, we have the ability to positively affect the lives of thousands of people every day."

Alsop will return to the private sector in hopes of spending more time with his family.
