Authorities and first responders held an active shooter drill at Charleston Area Medical Center General on Thursday.

Police cruisers, the bomb squad truck and armored vehicles surrounded the area during the drill.  Authorities tried to make it as realistic as possible.

"We've been talking about this for a few months, given that a lot of things have gone on in communities around the country. It seems to be a growing need that we might need to be prepared for something as unfortunate as this to happen," said Elizabeth Pellegrin, Chief Marketing Officer for CAMC.

Pellegrin said this is the first time the hospital has held an active shooter drill.  She said it could not have come at a better time.

"It just happened to be a coincidence that it was right after Boston, but certainly that's in everyone's mind right now," she said.

Authorities said we live in a day and age where active shooter drills will become the norm.

Captain Sean Crosier said these types of drills help them learn the layouts of huge buildings, like the hospital.

He said between the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department, Charleston Police, State Police, and first responders, Kanawha County is extremely prepared to handle any type of emergency.

"I think once you put all of our assets and resources together, I think we're very ready to respond to whatever comes our way," he said.

CAMC also tested its communication skills with the media and general public by updating its Twitter account during the drill.

CAMC Women and Children's and CAMC Memorial also held drills to test reaction to infectious diseases and mass trauma cases.
