    Alpha Natural Resources announced July 31 that 11 affiliated coal mines and other facilities in West Virginia could be idled by mid-October, potentially causing 1,100 to be laid off.

CINCINNATI (AP) - Authorities say a high school student pulled out a gun and shot himself in a classroom at a Cincinnati area high school.
   
The Hamilton County sheriff's office says the youth was taken to a hospital with a self-inflicted wound. They say there apparently was no threat to other students at La Salle High School, a private school west of Cincinnati.
   
A shot was reported at the school Monday morning at around 9 a.m. The school was put in lockdown until police confirmed there was no active shooter in the area.
   
A school official urged prayers for the student, but said no other information would be released about him.

CINCINNATI (AP) - Authorities say a shot has been fired at a Cincinnati area high school.
    
The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office says there is not an active shooter at La Salle High School, a private school west of Cincinnati.  Authorities say one person was transported to a hospital.
    
A shot was reported at the school Monday morning at around 9 a.m.
    
No other information was available immediately. A message was left at the school, which was in lock down.
