Audra State Park was hard hit by Superstorm Sandy on October 29, 2012. The park had to be closed because of downed trees crossing and blocking roads, trails and campsites.

"One minute it was a beautiful evening and a few minutes later Audra looked like a war zone," said Jon Teets, park superintendent. "We're still recovering, but the campground is now open."

During the winter and early spring months, Audra's limited staff was joined by employees of other state parks to cut and clear roads and trails. "It's been a daunting task," Teets said.

Davey Tree Service, currently under contract at both Audra and Holly River State Parks, also has been cutting and removing trees and brush. Teets says cleanup of park grounds, campground area and trails will continue through much of the summer into fall.

"Not all campsites will be available, but most will be ready to welcome campers back for the summer," said Teets. "It is the same great Audra, but upon arrival campers will see what havoc a storm can create in a few short minutes. We know our visitors will be forgiving of some conditions and understanding of the ongoing work we still have to accomplish."

Audra State Park is located in Barbour County and is close to Buckhannon in Upshur County. Audra is a camping park that features 67 tent and trailer sites that are all first come, first served. Picnicking, picnic shelter and a camper store are some of the amenities at the park. The Middle Fork River and Alum Cave are outstanding natural features at Audra.
