Man arrested after shootout with Athens County deputies

A man accused of firing shots at Athens County, Ohio Sheriff's deputies was arrested on Monday, April 29.

Deputies took Franklin Green, 34, into custody at a home on Fisher Road. They said they had arrived at the house just before 2 p.m. to serve an arrest warrant. Green fired what was believed to be a 30.06 rifle numerous times, according to the sheriff's department, striking the windshield of armored vehicle shattering the windshield. He also fired five shots into the rear of Deputy John Morris' vehicle with the canine ESKO in the rear of the vehicle. The bullets had struck the vehicle, and lodged between the armored shield between the door and ESKO. ESKO was not injured, according to deputies.

Deputies established a phone link with Green. According to deputies, Green advised everyone they needed to go home if they wanted to see their families because they will not go home alive.

Deputies said they were able to use smoke grenades to try and force Green out of the house. After more than an hour-long standoff, Green came out of the home.

No one was hurt.
