About 425 kids headed to Laidley Field in Charleston on Tuesday to compete in a one-day event.

Kanawha County Schools Special Olympic Special Games was held for mentally impaired participants. The athletes competed in all sorts of track and field events, including a 5K run.

Organizers said it's a chance for kids who don't get to participate in school sports to come out and have a day of fun and come home with a medal or two. "I got this medal for running really fast. I have really fast shoes," said Ashley Denson from Pinch, WV.

Each competitor had a volunteer to cheer them on through their events. While many of the competitors were students, not all attended Kanawha County schools. Some were graduates who participate on a regular basis.

The 2013 West Virginia Special Olympics Summer Games are approaching and approximately 700 Special Olympics athletes from throughout the state will gather in Charleston to compete at Laidley Field the weekend of June 7-9.

Athletes will compete in a variety of sports, such as track and field, swimming, golf, tennis, bocce, cycling, and softball.
