    Senate Bill 373, a bill drafted in response to the Jan. 9 chemical leak, establishes a commission to do studies and report back to the Legislature. Senate President Jeff Kessler, D-Marshall, made the first appointment to that board on Aug. 29. Kessler appointed Dr. Rahul Gupta, Executive Director of the Kanawha Charleston Health Department.

    Officials have focused on the longtime use of fire-fighting foams at the nearby Delaware Air National Guard Base at New Castle Airport. Those foams contain perfluorinated chemicals, or PFCs, which are an emerging health concern for drinking water supplies nationwide.

West Virginia's "other" state capitol has its own celebration scheduled for the state's 150th birthday next month.

Wheeling Mayor Andy McKenzie and West Virginia Division of Culture and History Commissioner Randall Reid-Smith made announcements May 2 about the sesquicentennial schedule.

Nearly 12 hours of activities are scheduled, and they will coincide with the Legislature's interim committee meetings from June 19 through June 21.

West Virginia natives Kathy Mattea and Landau Eugene Murphy will headline a concert Thursday, June 20, West Virginia Day, along with a ceremonial bell ringing, 35-gun salute and fireworks.

The events start Tuesday, June 18 with a lunch presentation about West Virginia's statehood.

A statehood block party with a legislative concert and reception at River City Aleworks is scheduled for Wednesday, June 19. Commemorative ceremonies and historical reenactments are on tap.

A "beers and beards" event June 21, the major motion picture "Lincoln," will be played at Heritage Port for Wheeling's regular riverfront movie night June 21 and June 22 will feature a Civil War Ball at the historic McClure Hotel.
