MORGANTOWN, WV -

Dr. Rebecca J. Schmidt, professor and chief of the West Virginia University Section of Nephrology in WVU's School of Medicine is the president-elect of the Renal Physicians Association, a national medical specialty association that represents and serves the interests of nephrology practitioners in their pursuit and delivery of quality kidney care.

Elected to RPA's board of directors in 2007, Schmidt has reached a milestone in RPA's history as the first woman to serve as president-elect. She began her two-year term at the conclusion of the association's annual meeting, which was held March 14-17 in New Orleans.

Schmidt earned her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences in Des Moines, Iowa, and completed an internal medicine residency and nephrology fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit prior to joining the faculty of WVU in 1993.

She has published manuscripts, contributed to several books on kidney disease and has presented and published more than 70 abstracts.

The Renal Physicians Association is the professional organization of nephrologists. The organization's goal is to ensure quality care under the highest standards of medical practice for patients with kidney disease and related disorders.
