Groups attend hearing in Charleston that could impact future mining on Blair Mountain

It's a hearing that could eventually decide the fate of an historic mountain.

The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection held a hearing Tuesday in Charleston to discuss the future of Blair Mountain in Logan County.

Several environmental groups have appealed to the state government, asking it to reconsider a strip mining permit. They claim it's important to preserve the battlefield.

Opponents of the permit have said that granting one permit would result in a domino effect. "There's four other permits. It would destroy the community of Blair if all these permits are allowed to go through," said Brandon Nida, a resident of Blair.

Several groups have petitioned the federal government to place Blair Mountain on a national registry of historic places which would prevent companies from mining on the mountain.
