Gov. Tomblin recognizes declares May 9 'Hospice Volunteer Day'

Hospice volunteers from around the Mountain State were in Charleston on Thursday as Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin, D-W.Va., declared May 9, Hospice Volunteer Day in West Virginia.

Those in attendance were given certificates marking their efforts to help make people's final moments a little better through their hard work.

Providers said they wouldn't be able to do their jobs without the help from people who are willing to give their time freely. "Without our volunteers, we couldn't provide for our patients as well as we do," said Carol Matheny, Kanawha Hospice Inc.

The governor also recognized six veteran volunteers in an effort to raise awareness of the 'We Honor Veterans' program.
