BECKLEY, WV -

One school in West Virginia had its first ever graduation May 11.

More than 100  students walked in the first-ever commencement exercises for The University of Charleston-Beckley.

The ceremony took place at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center.

The body of students came from more than a dozen different states.

UC President Ed Welch served as the commencement speaker for the event. He has degrees from McDaniel College, Boston University School of Theology and Boston University Graduate School.

The exercises are a big deal for the city of Beckley as the University of Charleston took over after the former Mountain State University lost its battle with accreditation.

The Higher Learning Commission withdrew its accreditation from the now defunct MSU, citing a lack of leadership, resources and integrity.

The decision was made during the HLC's board of trustees June 28 meeting, and took effect Aug. 27, 2012.

The University of Charleston took over the campus in January.
