Hundreds made their way to the football field at Riverside High School to honor Patrick Petry.

Friends and family of 16-year-old Petry say he lost his life far too soon.  Patrick loved the outdoors, and was learning how to ride a dirt bike.

"Patrick was a good old boy, he always had a smile on his face," said his math teacher, Ryan Carter.

Patrick wrecked his dirt bike Friday night.  When family members found him, he was alert and responsive, but at the hospital, nearly five hours later, Patrick passed away.

Doctors said he had extensive internal injuries, and died as a result.  Carter says one of his students texted him on Saturday.

"He said, I don't know if I can make it through the day.  It will be too awkward.  I really broke down.  I'm only 25 years old, but it's they're like my kids to me," Carter said.

"They're uncomfortable and you might not seem cool for wearing it, but what's more important, looking cool or your life," said one student, referring to helmets.

In the wake of Patrick's death, friends said they won't forget him, and they said he has reminded them that life can change in an instant.

"That could have been me," said one student.  "I go riding like that all the time, it kind of scares me to do it, you know.  I'm definitely going to start wearing helmets, because I don't want this to happen to me.

No word yet on funeral arrangements.
