UPDATE:

A man said he is lucky to be alive after neighbors helped him escape his burning house.

William Russell, his wife, and sister-in-law were sleeping inside their Walnut Street home when it caught fire just after 5 a.m.

It happened in East Bank in Kanawha County

By the time firefighters arrived on scene, the fire was out of control.  It quickly spread next door to a neighbor's fence.

Connie Bradley was taking care of her mother when she noticed the commotion outside.

She said the fence was on fire, so she did the only thing she knew to do.

"I started spraying the fence that was already on fire. My neighbor came over with her water hose and we just tried to make sure it didn't get close to mother's house," she said.

Her mom's fence is ruined, but she is grateful the Russell's made it out safely.  She said the situation could have been much worse.

"It was very scary. It was very scary. It could have come to all three of these houses so we are very lucky it didn't spread," she said.

Firefighters said Bradley's reaction is a natural one.  Her instincts kicked in when she saw the fence on fire.

Firefighters said every situation is different, and they will always make a quick decision whether or not to evacuate area homes during a fire.

In this Walnut Street fire, neighboring homes were safe, minus the fence, they said.

Firefighters do not believe the fire is suspicious.
