Some local high school students took the time Wednesday to honor those who fought for our freedoms.

Members of the Junior ROTC from Russell High School volunteered their time to place flags on 3,000 veteran graves at Rose Hill Cemetery in Ashland.

Volunteers split into groups of two or three, placed flags at the grave, stepped back and saluted.

13 News spoke to one student who said it's an important event.

"It's really respectful that we do this and some of them are forgotten and even though that's sad, it's really important that we do this just so that they'll all be remembered for what they did," Russell High School Junior, Hannah Evans said.

Organizers say it's very emotional when the flag is placed and a spouse who is visiting gets to watch.
