UPDATE:

We've learned new details in an early morning accident which resulted in a snapped power pole.

The crash happened on Smith Street.

Charleston Police said the driver of the mini-van picked up three guys from a bar on the West Side.

He was driving them home on the East End when one of the men pulled a gun on him.

"He panicked, swatted the gun away, and hit the gas in the car and crashed into the telephone pole," said Sgt. Tony Hazelett.

Police said the driver ran off towards the hospital for treatment.  He suffered minor injuries.

The three men got away.

It took AEP hours to fix the pole, downed lines, and actually restore power to a few dozen customers who were affected by the mess.

Hazelett said the situation could have had deadly consequences.

"It could've been a lot worse. During the crash the gun could have gone off," he said.

Police are looking for the three men they believe are involved in the robbery.
