UPDATE: St.  Albans Police identified the victim as 55-year-old Michael Pierson of St. Albans who was hit by the CSX coal train about 1 p.m. Saturday.

Witnesses believe the man was sitting near the tracks as the train arrived and when he stood up it appeared to them he stumbled as he tried to walk and then fell across the tracks.  The train was heading east bound at the time Pierson fell across the rails.

The area around the CSX bridge across the Coal River and west of the B Street crossing was closed due to emergency crew activity which is behind the Gateway Shopping Center.

An investigation is underway and it is expected officials will review video on the train to determine the nature of the incident.  All indications point toward an accident and no fault by railroad personnel.

According to investigators, a man has been hit and killed by a train near Jones St. and Riverside Drive in St. Albans behind the Gateway Shopping Center.

Dispatchers say it happened just after 1 p.m.

This makes the second man killed by a train in the last 24 hours, on Friday a man was killed in Hansford by an Amtrack train.

St. Albans police are handling the investigation.
