Stone was shot and killed in the Hartland area of Clay County, WV, on Tuesday afternoon.  According to police, it appears Stone suffered a gunshot wound to the torso. They said they believe a shotgun was used in this murder.

UPDATE:

Close family friends said Clarence Jack Stone, 65, was trying to change when he was shot and killed.

They said in the past two years, Stone had overcome a drinking problem and survived two car wrecks.

"He had quit drinking, quit swearing around us, exercised, lost weight," said Retta Brown, who knew Stone for more than 30 years. "We didn't expect him to go like this.  This is just unbelievable."

Brown said she believes an argument led to the shooting that ended Stone's life on Tuesday afternoon.

"He'd argue that a black horse was white, but he wasn't really mean with it, unless someone provoked him," Brown said.

Investigators with the West Virginia State Police and Clay County Sheriff's Department are still looking into the details surrounding the murder.  They've yet to make any arrests or identify suspects in the homicide investigation.

Stone's body was found in a garden on Sycamore Street in Hartland.

Troopers said Stone didn't own the property and actually lived in Indore.  People in the area said they hope police make an arrest soon.

"He's running around here or her or whoever shot the man, he could shoot any of us," said Rita Runion, who drove from Procious to see the crime scene for herself.

Troopers told 13 News that they've visited the neighborhood before.  In December 2012, police responded to a shooting on Sycamore Street that left one woman with non-serious injuries.

Police would not say whether the two incidents are related.

Friends said Stone owned a camper in the Hartland area where he stayed during summers.

While loved ones waited for answers, they could only think to do one thing.

"Pray for the family," Brown said. "I'm sure Jack knew he was going to leave today. He wouldn't have come to the garden."

Brown said Stone leaves behind a wife, two children, and three grandchildren.
