DOH to test friction quality of WV Turnpike

Posted: Updated:

Changes could be coming to the West Virginia Turnpike after a string of tractor-trailer accidents over the past few weeks.

The Division of Highways said it will conduct tests on the road to see if friction quality is to blame.

"It gives a reading of the skid resistance or friction of the road surface," said Greg Barr, General Manager of WV Parkways Authority.

State police tell 13 News most of the recent accidents have involved big trucks.  Troopers said speeding and weather conditions played a role in the majority of these crashes.

Still, if the friction quality is also an issue, the state said it's a fairly easy fix.

"We can grind the asphalt. We could mill up to one-and-a-half inches and put down new asphalt," Barr said.

Troopers will have extra patrols stationed along the turnpike this week.
