Huntington city Council votes to approve Fairfield West project

Posted: Updated:

Huntington City Council voted Monday evening to adopt a resolution to begin changing the Fairfield West area.

City leaders say the Fairfield West Redevelopment plan will allow urban renewal authorities to start purchasing properties in the area for residential structures.

They say they plan to build affordable housing with three-story buildings containing 40 units, as well as 150 scattered site developments throughout the area.

Charles Holley of planning and development says the Northcott Court apartment complex near Hal Greer Boulevard would be raised to make room for commercial property development and hopes it will bring new business to the city.

Holley says people who may want to sell their homes can have them appraised and the city may try to work out an agreement to buy them.

He also says that eminent domain will not be used to buy the homes.

Holley says the project could start in the fall with work beginning on the first 40-unit complex.

Construction costs could run in to tens of millions of dollars and is expected to take five years to complete.
