BECKLEY, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia counties in forest communities are getting nearly $2.9 million in federal funds.

U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall says the Department of the Interior is issuing the checks under the 2013 Payments in Lieu of Taxes Program. The program compensates localities for national forests, wildlife refuges and other lands that are owned by the federal government and therefore not subject to local taxation.

Rahall says the program has been extremely important in assisting schools and communities in rural counties. The largest payment in the state will go to Pocahontas County, which will receive more than $748,000.
