Accounting firm Dixon Hughes Goodman is urging the public to donate non-perishable, canned food items for its second annual Count the Cans Community Collection Day, scheduled for June 21.

The food drive will benefit Mountaineer Food Bank, which serves 48 of West Virginia's 55 counties. The collection will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Chase Tower on the corner of Summers and Virginia streets in downtown Charleston. Cars can enter from Kanawha Boulevard onto Summers Street and go through the drop-off line where Dixon Hughes Goodman representatives will collect the donations.

Any non-perishable, canned food items can be donated. Most needed items include canned meats, peanut butter, boxed meals, cereal, crackers, gelatin, granola bars, pudding, fruit cups, canned fruits and vegetables, fruit juice, pasta, rice, canned soups, dry or canned beans, powdered milk and household cleaning items.

According to information from Dixon Hughes Goodman, food banks see an increased need during the summer months because children who rely on school meals are not in school. Food banks also see fewer donations from the public during the summer.
