Thousands of students entered but only a few won top honors in an art contest celebrating West Virginia's 150th Birthday.

Monday their work was on display at the Governor's Mansion as they received awards for their efforts.

Drawings showcased the history of the state and were presented in the form of birthday cards. Older students were asked to make videos wishing West Virginia Happy Birthday.

Darrin Vance from Petersburg was the winner of the high school division. He says there is plenty of beauty to capture in the state.

"I just went with what I really like to photograph the most and that is nature and wildlife," Vance said.

Parents and teachers took advantage of the visit to share their memories of West Virginia and to teach kids more about the history of the Mountain State.

West Virginia Day is coming up Thursday.
