MOUNDSVILLE, WV -

Several lawmakers hopped a bus early June 20 to stretch the borders of their monthly interim committee meetings from Wheeling down to Moundsville.

The Joint Committee on Government Operations and the Joint Standing Committee on Government Organization toured Grave Creek Mound and even hiked to the top of the Adena burial ground in the center of town.

The museum, which opened in 1978 and cost $2 million to build at the time, is 25,646 square feet. It contains detailed information about the Adena Indian tribe and several rotating displays. The museum currently has a Marble King display, along with a Homer Laughlin China exhibit.

Lawmakers, staff and spouses learned that the mound was discovered in 1770, and they were led on a hike to its top. In 1838, road engineers measured its height at 69 feet tall with a diameter of 295 feet at the base.

The Legislature's Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources subcommittee toured Grand Vue Park in Moundsville.

Subcommittee members heard about the renovations the park has undergone in the past several years, and there was one big attraction for several of them.

"I'm really proud to have them here, especially at the park today, with people from all over the state that I serve with in the Legislature to show off this gem of a park and the zip line," said Sen. Larry Edgell, D-Wetzel. "Everyone was excited to come here this year because of the zip line."

Lawmakers asked several questions about the zip line's construction and maintenance as well as the park's funding and the community's trends.

"We had some economic development grants back in 2005, and they're actually getting to see how those did and how the park's grown from those," said Grand Vue Park General Manager Craig White.
