    Alpha Natural Resources announced July 31 that 11 affiliated coal mines and other facilities in West Virginia could be idled by mid-October, potentially causing 1,100 to be laid off.

UPDATE:

The volunteer firefighter who died Monday after collapsing at the scene of a fire in Kanawha County has been identified as Chaplain John T. Appleton, according to a news release from the Malden Volunteer Fire Department. Appleton was the pastor at the Kanawha Salines Presbyterian Church in Malden.


UPDATE:

A firefighter has died following a mobile home fire in Sissonville.  Officials believe the firefighter suffered from cardiac arrest and was transported to the hospital.   According to officials, the firefighter's death is not connected to the fire directly.

Multiple fire departments were on scene, but they are not releasing the name of the firefighter or what department he worked for until family is notified.

ORIGINAL:

According to crews on the scene, a mobile home caught fire on Happy Hollow Road in Sissonville around 2:20 p.m. Monday.

Fire crews said no one was inside at the time of the fire, and the home was destroyed.

Firefighters said they had to take turns battling the blaze because of the extreme heat.

One of those firefighters was rushed to the hospital, his condition is unknown at this time.  Initial belief is that he suffered from cardiac arrest.
