UPDATE: Name released of man shot and killed for pointing rifle at troopers in Clay County

Police have released the name of the man shot while police attempted to serve a search warrant in Clay County, WV.

Richard Dale Kohler, 66, was shot and killed when police say he pointed a rifle at them as they entered his home to search it.



The West Virginia State Police say a man was shot and killed after he pointed a rifle at troopers.

The shooting happened at a home on Maysel Ridge in Clay County around 6 a.m.

Sgt. Michael Baylous said members of the State Police special response team and Drug Enforcement Administration were trying to serve a federal search warrant in relation to an ongoing drug investigation.  Baylous said no arrest warrant had been issued.

When authorities knocked on the door and announced their presence, the man refused to open it, Baylous said.

Troopers had to forcefully enter the house.   When they did, Baylous said the man was pointing a rifle at them.  Multiple troopers fired at the man.  Those troopers are on paid leave pending this investigation.

The man's identity has not been released pending family notification.
