MORGANTOWN, WV -

In anticipation of her July 1 starting date, West Virginia University School of Medicine associate professor and Department of Emergency Medicine residency program director Dr. Hollynn Larrabee, is preparing to assume the duties of the school's designated institutional official (DIO) and assistant dean for graduate medical education (GME).

In that role, she will be responsible for the training programs that prepare medical school graduates for their chosen medical specialties. Larrabee's new role completes recent efforts to reorganize the school's Department of Medical Education.

Larrabee is an associate professor with dual appointments in the departments of emergency medicine and medical education. She earned her medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 2001 and completed an emergency medicine residency at the University of Cincinnati in 2005.

Since her arrival at WVU in 2008, Larrabee has been actively involved in the daily education of medical students, residents, fellows and flight personnel in her roles of vice chair of education and residency program director for emergency medicine and as a medical director for HealthNet aeromedical services. Larrabee has received several teaching awards including the Dean's Award for Excellence in Education and was an inaugural member of the WVU Academy of Excellence in Teaching and Learning in 2009.

Dr. Don K. Nakayama, has been selected as the new chair of the West Virginia University School of Medicine Department of Surgery.

Nakayama's previous academic and administrative leadership positions have included the University of North Carolina and the University of Pittsburgh, where he was on the faculty at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.

A graduate of Stanford University, Nakayama earned his medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco, and then stayed at UCSF for a residency in general surgery and a research fellowship in fetal surgery. Nakayama also completed a fellowship in pediatric surgery at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He later earned his M.B.A. from the University of North Carolina.
