First responders meet to discuss lessons learned in Kanawha County from 2012 Derecho

Posted: Updated:

A panel of first responders and Kanawha Charleston Health Department workers gathered at the Civic Center on the eve of one of our area's most devastating storms.

On June 29, 2012, the strong winds of a derecho blew threw the region. They ripped through just about everything in their path. The storm left hundreds of thousands of customers without power for days.

The panel offered up ways on Friday evening to keep the extended power outages from happening again. "it's important to pull together essential items like candles, a battery-powered radio, water and other non-perishable foods. Also, shut off the power and see what works so you're prepared for the time when the power goes out," said Bob Sharpe, Chief Deputy with the Charleston Fire Department.

The panel also recommended that every family have a family emergency plan and a pet emergency plan. You can learn more about how to be prepared by clicking on this link. www.kchdwv.org
