Head Start programs in Monroe and Nicholas counties will receive more than $1.5 million in federal funding.

Head Start, a national development program for low-income children that helps prepare them for school from a young age, is administered by the Department of Health and Human Services. The programs offer eligible children and families access to critical health, nutrition, education and social services.

The funding is made up of $781,236 for the Nicholas Community Action Partnership in Summersville and $641,355 for the Monroe County Board of Education in Union.

U.S. Sens. Jay Rockefeller and Joe Manchin, along with Rep. Nick Rahall, all D-W.Va., announced the funding July 5.
