A new agreement between the University of Charleston and New River Community and Technical College will allow New River students to seamlessly transition from completed associate degrees into select bachelor degree programs at UC.

UC President Ed Welch and New River CTC President L. Marshall Washington signed the articulation agreement July 9 at the UC-Beckley Learning Resource Center in Beckley.

"Today's signing opens doors for students in Southern West Virginia to continue their higher education careers," Welch said in a news release. "This is a new and clear path for New River students to stretch their career goals and earning potential by transitioning easily into UC's four-year programs after completing their associate degrees."

The agreement will allow transfer students to graduate with bachelor's degrees in two years, and in many cases students will be able to move directly into a graduate program at UC.

Washington said he's excited about the opportunity the agreement presents, and he hopes it will mark the first of many partnerships between the two schools.

New River students who also serve in the West Virginia National Guard and who transfer to UC will be eligible for the Golden Eagle Scholarship, which provides as much as $9,000 per year in tuition assistance.

UC is a private school based in Charleston. It recently announced two new locations in Beckley and Martinsburg, and it launched an online program Jan. 1. The 2012-2013 academic year was UC's 125th anniversary.

New River CTC serves nine counties in southeastern West Virginia from five locations: Mercer County Campus, Nicholas County Campus, Beckley Campus, Greenbrier Valley Campus and the Advanced Technology Center. Its administrative offices are in Beckley.
