Marshall University has undergone several changes in the past few years, and more are to come.

School officials will announce July 18 their master plan for the next 10 years. An event will take place from 5 p.m.-6:30 p.m. in the Memorial Student Center on the school's Huntington campus, and all members of the Huntington and Marshall communities are invited to attend.

"We have heard the suggestions of the communities and incorporated them into the plan," said Karen Kirtley, Marshall's senior vice president of administration. "We're looking forward to refining the plan even further based on input received at the open house."

The plan will be presented to the Marshall University Board of Governors and the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission.

David Hendrickson, then-chairman of HEPC, said at the commission's June meeting that the state's four-year public schools have gotten away from submitting master plans. Under state code, all institutions are required to develop master plans that include detailed demonstrations of how the plan will be used to meet the goals of the institution, an outline of missions, degree offerings, resource requirements, physical plant needs, faculty needs, enrollment levels and other determinants and projections and documentation showing how the HEPC was involved in the development of the master plan, among other elements.

"This has been a code section for quite a few years. It's not something new," Hendrickson said. "For whatever reason, we as a commission and the institutions have gotten away from it. I think its critical, especially when we're looking at the budgetary constraints we're looking at right now, that as a system we need a plan and to make sure we are implementing those plans on a statewide basis at each institution and incorporating a lot of planning and detail on how we're going to get from A to B in educating the students in the state of West Virginia."
