Head Start programs in Greenbrier County soon will receive $1 million from the federal government.

Sens. Jay Rockefeller and Joe Manchin and Rep. Nick Rahall, all D-W.Va., announced July 16 that the Greenbrier County Board of Education had received the funding. All three congressmen said Head Start is a vital program and the money will ensure children in Greenbrier County have access to the educational, nutritional and social services Head Stat provides.

"If we want to secure West Virginia's future, we must continue to invest in educational opportunities for all of our children," Manchin said. "We have a responsibility as West Virginians to prepare our future leaders to compete in the global marketplace that will strengthen our economy and keep jobs here at home.

"This grant will make sure that the children in Greenbrier County will have access to the services they need to succeed and a healthy start."

Rahall represents Greenbrier County and is a member of the Congressional Rural Education Caucus. He said investments such as this help children reach their full potential.

"We must be diligent in our pursuit to encourage learning, improve graduation rates and ensure that our children have 21st century skills to compete in the ever-growing global economy," Rahall said.

Rockefeller, who has long-supported Head Start and school nutrition programs, said the funding means children and families will have access to health, education and social services.

"Investing in West Virginia's Head Start programs means giving our most vulnerable children access to a nurturing environment where they can learn and grow," he said. "This essential funding will provide our young children and their families with ongoing access to health and educational services, and it will chart the course for our youngest children's future academic success."
