Crews working to get air conditioners installed before start of class

With hot temperatures this week, most people are seeking comfort in the air conditioning.

But as the start of school creeps closer in some counties parents are wondering if their child's classroom will be cool.

Renovations are expected to bring relief to a school in Kanawha County that has been troubled by heating and cooling problems for years.

East Bank Middle School is getting a significant makeover this summer. The primary focus has been installing a brand new air conditioning system.

"Anytime you get into a remodel job you always run into a lot of issues that architects and engineers don't see," explained Gary Profitt with DSO Mechanical. He is overseeing the air conditioning aspect of the renovations at the school. "We have run in to a lot of that."

Profitt said crews are working longer hours to get the project finished in time for the start of school.

"With school starting earlier this year it has caused a few problems," Profitt said. "We have been able to work everything out."

Crews have installed more than 30 new units on top of the roof and have done extensive work inside.

Profitt said they are on schedule for the most part and should be almost all the way done in time for students to return. He said there may be a few finishing touches, but students should be cool and comfortable.

We have spoken to Kanawha County School Board President Pete Thaw about this matter recently. He says officials have assured him renovations at East Bank and a few others in the county would be ready in time for the start of school.
