Amelia Courts has been named the new president and CEO of The Education Alliance, the West Virginia-based statewide public education fund announced July 18.

Courts replaces Patricia Kusimo, who left The Education Alliance after five years at the helm. Courts will begin her duties July 31.

She brings with her 25 years of experience in the education sector and experience in working collectively with business and community organizations. Most recently, Courts served as assistant state superintendent for the West Virginia Department of Education—a position she held for three years.

"Amelia Courts has long been a leading advocate for enhancing public school student achievement," said Jim Thomas, chairman of The Education Alliance's board of directors and member of Jackson Kelly. "We are excited to have another intelligent and respected voice to lead our team. With her extensive background, Dr. Courts also led educational advances of foreign students by launching the state's International School for Japanese students grades PreK-12."

Courts said she's looking forward to getting to work.

"Increasing student achievement is critical to our state's future success and its something we all must work together to support," she said. "I look forward to joining The Education Alliance and building on that legacy of support."
