Frontier Workers plan Charleston rally as contract expiration nears

Posted: Updated:

The Communication Workers of America have planned a rally for Frontier Communications employees to show their solidarity throughout negotiations about a new contract.

The rally is scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 27 in front of Frontier's headquarters in Charleston at 1500 MacCorkle Avenue.

The current labor agreement covers 1,600 Frontier employees throughout the state, and it is scheduled to expire at midnight Aug. 2. According to the Communications Workers of America, which represents the workers, the CWA has been in negotiations with Frontier for the past month "without significant progress."

Frontier issued a statement last week. In it, Senior Vice President and General Manager for West Virginia Dana Waldo said Frontier provides its employees with "very competitive wages and benefits."

"Frontier will bargain in good faith with the union, just as it has done in past negotiations that led to contract ratifications in West Virginia with CWA Locals 2276 and 2001 and IBEW Locals 317 and 2035," Waldo said in the statement.

The contract covers former Verizon employees who became Frontier employees when Frontier purchased Verizon's landline business as part of an $8.6 billion deal in 2009.

CWA Local 2001 will host the rally and will offer refreshments and entertainment. Scheduled speakers for the rally will include UMWA President Cecil Roberts, CWA District Vice Presidents Edward Mooney and Chris Shelton along with elected officials and labor leaders from throughout the state.
