A second man has died from injuries received in a Doddridge County gas well explosion that occurred July 7.

Jason Mearns, 37, of Beverly, died at 11:42 a.m. Sunday, July 28 at the West Penn Hospital burn unit, an official from the Allegheny County medical examiner's office said. Officials said Mearns died because a lung injury caused by thermal burns deprived Mearns' brain of oxygen.

Tommy Paxton, 45, of Walton, died Tuesday, July 23 at the West Penn Hospital burn unit from injuries he received in the gas well blast.

Three men remain hospitalized as a result of their injuries sustained in the explosion. Their conditions are unknown.

The Department of Environmental Protection ordered that operations stop at the well site and also ordered Antero to submit a report showing that it understands the cause of the incident and is able to safely resume operations.
