HUNTINGTON, WV -

Dozens of undergraduate college students from around West Virginia were showing off their summer research projects Monday.

The 12th annual WV-INBRE Summer Research Symposium was held at Marshall University. Some research projects included treating chronic low back pain, the negative effects of diabetes on the brain and heart and preventing obesity.

While this may look like a glorified science fair, professors say to take note. This is the future of science and medicine.

Dr. Richard Egleton Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine told 13 News, "This gives them the option to get a first hand experience of how to interact with other professionals and basically to show their excitement. I mean this is the first step in their career as scientists or M.D.'s."

The summer research program is designed to support biomedical research in the state and is funded through the National Institutes of Health.
