PINCH, WV -

With the first day of school for Kanawha County just around the corner, educators and law enforcement officers came together to address the issue of school safety.

Starting tomorrow, deputies with the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office will visit local schools to increase their presence in classrooms.  They plan on continuing these visits throughout the year.

Officers also plan on setting up emergency lighting along roadways.

Teachers say while it's important to deter crime, deputies will also be able to build stronger relationships with students and staff.

"When the kids start at an early age seeing law [enforcement] in the school, they'll see that police are there to help them. The aren't always after the bad guy," said Karen Messinger.

The program will also place ambulances in front of schools to remind motorists that school zone speed limits are resuming.
